Ceramics, paintings, jewelry, stained glass, and other items can be found at thirty-four different booths. The artists were selected by a jury, and some of the well-known artists whose work will be on display include Sumi von Dassow, Pam Herring, Mark Johnson, Adele Earnshaw, Tim Brown, and more.

Dassow and Herring are known for their ceramic arts. Dassow’s unique creations include Chinese pottery inscribed with “congratulations,” “double happiness,” and “tranquility”, along with horsehair pottery that has a pattern burned into its surface by draping horsehair over the pot when it is removed from the kiln.  Johnson, who lives in Breckenridge, mainly uses oil and acrylics and has lately started using soft pastels to paint plain air landscapes.

After working with watercolors for many years, Earnshaw began to only work with oil paint. Landscapes and wildlife are included in her subject matter. Her paintings have been shown in galleries all over the world and she has published several painting books.  Meet the Artists judge and photographer, Todd Powell comments that Brown, a photographer from Salida, creates “incredible digital art.”

Since artists have time to talk with visitors about their work, the show is quite popular.  It is a wonderful event because it is rather small and intimate, Powell remarked.  Tom Kramer, president of the Summit County Arts Council which organizes Meet the Artists, said “It’s a fantastic picnic in the park”.

We had light rain drizzle but it didn’t stop the bikers from riding on the connected bike trails from Breckenridge to Frisco, Dillon, Keystone, or Copper mountain ski resort.

One big reason to buy family vacation homes in Summit County—Colorado’s playground—is for the variety of intergenerational recreational activities that everyone in the family will enjoy.  Starting at the Breckenridge Nordic Center or the Frisco Nordic Center, residents and guests can interchange cross-country skis for snowshoes.  Both centers are accessible via the free shuttle route.

Breckenridge Nordic Center, located at the clubhouse of the Breckenridge Golf Course, offers 16 kilometers of snowshoeing on scenic nature trails.  Great conditions extend from the lower Beaver Meadows to The Colorado.  Snowshoe tours are offered daily.  By advanced reservation, there are also special moonlight snowshoe tours at night.  At times, a last-minute walk in can be accommodated.  Snowshoe tours are also available at the Frisco Nordic Center by reservation only. 

During January, the Tour the Summit by Ski or Snowshoe festival invites the entire community out for a ski or snowshoe 10 kilometer run from Breck to Friso.   The fun event benefits Friends of the Dillon Ranger District.  Participants include everyone from babies, children, youth, and young professionals, to the “middle aged” and seniors to centurions.

Frisco also has free sledding hills, a kid’s log cabin, kick sledding, and children’s tours by pulk sled.  Built specifically for carrying children and cargo, pulk sleds are a growing segment of the cross-country ski experience.  They are much easier and safer than skiing or snowshoeing with a baby in a backpack or a front child-carrier.

The more adventurous can explore two Nordic skier tunnels along a continuous looped trail system or set out for the warming huts at Hallelujah Hut and/or Kathy’s Viewpoint.  There are an infinite number of destinations around the authentic Victorian mining town.  Along the Ten Mile Range to the Continental Divide, discoveries are in store year after year.

Buyers who come looking for vacation real estate in Breckenridge during this week, January 13-16, can watch how the blocks of snow are built and even join in the fun helping the Town of Breckenridge to make it happen.

T blank canvases of snow that are carefully planted around the Riverwalk Center and Blue River Plaza will be turned into awe-inspiring snow sculptures by the teams of artisans.  Each four-person team carves a unique sculpture into its twenty ton block of snow.  Using no power tools—only creativity and hands—the sculptors form their masterpieces before thousands of spectators.

Sculpting begins January 20 and ends, usually with a flurry of all-night finishing touches, on Saturday, January 21 at 10:00 a.m.  As judges observe the emerging designs, spectators may also voice their opinions by voting.  On January 25, a panel of artists awards the top three teams on the basis of theme, style, and technique.  They will also announce the winners of the awards for People’s Choice, Kids’ Choice, and Artists’ Choice.

Another interesting element of the event is the exhibit at the Snow Sculpture Headquarters in Riverwalk Center.  The stories from the last two decades of Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships will be displayed.  Everyone can learn about the roots of the event, the competitors, the beauty and fun that the Championships bring to this historic village.  They began as a tribute to the God of Snow during the annual January Ullr Fest and grew into an international event.

The event leaves a spectacular Ice Village at the Riverwalk Center.  Glowing statues remain on display, weather permitting, until February 1.  At that time, they disappear during the night.

The teams selected to participate in this competition include Team Bulgaria, Team Canada Ontario, Team Canada Yukon, Team Canada U.S., Team China, Team German, Team Mexico, Team Netherlands, Team Spain, Team Switzerland, Team U.S. Alaska, Team U.S. Breckenridge, Team U.S. Loveland, Team Minnesota, Team Vermont, and Team Wyoming.

A tribute to the mythical Norse God of Snow, the legendary Main Street Parade is part of the weeklong Ullr events being held January 4-10 near homes in Breckenridge.  Son of Sif and stepson of Thor, the God of Thunder, Ullr is the winter god.  He loves the cold and could be seen traveling over the country on his skis and skates.  It is said that he covered the earth with snow each winter to protect it from harm.

As he skied through the Northern Forests, Ullr was so skilled with the bow that he could beat anyone out for a hunt.  Ullr also glided throughout the land on his great skis for pleasure.  One of his travels brought him to Breckenridge, high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, where he decided to settle down.  Taken by the beautiful mountain village, Ullr blessed his new home with some of the finest snow in the world.

And so it is that the people of Breckenridge began in 1963 to hold a Festival every year to repay and honor Ullr, the God of Winter, for his gift of snow.  When Ullr came to town that year, locals went to the Town Council and lobbied to hold “Ullr Dag”, which can be interpreted as Ullr Day.  During the first few years, locals honored Ullr with gold coins, parties, skiing, and more parties. 

As the years passed, they embellished the festivities with the Ullr Ball, the Ullr Bonfire, Snow Sculpting, a Ullr King and Queen, the Ullympics, dating games, and the Ullr Parade.  At times old skis are burned in the bonfire while the parties emblazon the town.  Plan to make it to Comedy Night and/or the Mountain Rotary Club Chilly Chili Cook Off, too.

Buyers wanting good deals for ski-in/ski-out Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, or Keystone real estate can beat the Christmas rush this week.  Interested in cheering on participants in the Hartford Ski Spectacular?  Also happening this week, it is the nation’s largest winter sports festival for individuals with physical disabilities. 

And by Saturday, your family may enjoy the Rocky Mountain Christmas concert with John Adams and Friends performing at 7:00 p.m. in the Riverwalk Center.  This is the first winter season available for events in the new Riverwalk facilities and a jovial Santa will be on hand.  The concert benefits the Father Dyer United Methodist Church Food Bank and Special Services Program. 

Smiling Santa will also show up this weekend at Breckenridge Associates downtown for “Santa Visits.”  Breckenridge Associates Real Estate is also the sponsor of the week-long Breckenridge Snowflake Challenge, a grassroots contest in its first year founded by our associate Rob Neyland.  For $5,000 in prize money, locals are having the time of their lives helping Neyland bring back the roots of the native street art.

And Vail Resorts—owner of Breckenridge, Keystone, and Copper Mountain ski resorts—is making it oh so affordable to ensure that all of your family and friends enjoy the best ski season ever.  Vail Resorts is offering the new Epic Pass, Colorado Pass, Colorado Pass PLUS, Summit Pass, and a pass for free skiing for 5th and 6th graders.

Breckenridge opened up Peak 8 with service on the SuperChair and the BreckConnect Gondola.  Keystone opened with a brand new 8-passenger gondola in River Run Village and its new mid-station stop part way up the mountain.  Copper Mountain has opened the American Eagle, Easy Rider, and Excelerator lifts and also opened the Eagle Jib Park with 10 box and rail elements.
