The gold-laden mountains and rivers of Colorado lured tens of thousands 150 years ago. These same Summit County Rocky Mountains, more easily accessible today via Interstate 70, offer recreation and retreat for 25,000 residents (over 100,000 at peak season) from all over the world. The free Summit Stage bus service offers connections between Summit County’s resorts and towns from Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco, Keystone, Silverthorne, and Copper Mountain. The combined communities offer abundant resources and amenities for beautiful mountain living.
Choices for homes in Summit County abound. Some live on or near the four internationally known ski resorts located in different towns, including Breckenridge and Keystone resorts. Others choose a studio condominium on the shores of Dillon Reservoir or an elegant single-family home at the Highlands at Breckenridge golf community. Still others live above their small businesses and on spacious recreational ranches in rural areas where the fishing is the best. Some choose historic Victorian Breckenridge real estate and others prefer modern rustic log mansions.
The historic options come to life, along with the county’s colorful past, at many museums and information centers including the Summit Historical Museum, the Frisco Historic Park, The Dillon School House, and Breckenridge’s historic residences, Barney Ford Museum, and Edwin Carter House.
Summit County is one of the most sought-after locations in the nation, representing the pinnacle of the nation’s ski and hospitality industry. With an 20 or 30 feet of snow falling each year and moderate summer temperatures, people are flocking here for summer as well as winter activities and to feel at home in a small-town atmosphere. In fact, with the advent of wireless and high-speed technologies, a variety of professions and businesses are thriving from rural areas. People who once vacationed here are finding ways to spend more and more time where they really want to live.
The commercial sector is blooming along with the service sector. The Summit County Chambers of Commerce provide links for the business community and the talented residential community. Over the next several years, commercial space is opening up in several palatial multi-use developments near the slopes to meet some of the demand for space.
Health care is readily available at St. Anthony Summit Medical Center, which offers the region’s highest level of emergency care seven days a week, 24 hours a day. It is also the mountain base for Flight for Life and offers general health and comprehensive care. Summit County Schools provide educational services in a 4A high school, a middle school, and seven neighborhood elementary schools. Students regularly perform very well on the state tests, and recently two schools ranked at the top. In addition, Colorado Mountain College campuses serve ongoing educational needs in the community.
